The Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program is now available, making home and business battery systems significantly more affordable.
This $2.3 billion initiative provides an upfront discount on battery installations through the Small-scale Technology Certificate (STC) scheme.
How the New Battery Rebate Works:
The rebate is based on usable battery capacity (kWh). It applies to systems up to 50 kWh per site and is delivered as an upfront discount at installation through the national STC rebate program.
As of May 2026, the rebate uses a tiered structure. The first 14 kWh receives the highest rebate of approximately $240–$250 per kWh. The next portion from 15–28 kWh receives a reduced rebate at around 60% of the base rate. Any capacity from 29–50 kWh receives a further reduced rebate at approximately 15% of the base rate. This means larger batteries still receive more total rebate, but less per additional kWh.
Battery Rebate Savings (Post–May 2026)
Typical upfront savings based on current rebate values are as follows*:
A 15 kWh battery attracts a rebate of approximately $3,600
A 24 kWh battery attracts a rebate of approximately $4,900
A 32 kWh battery attracts a rebate of approximately $5,700
A 48 kWh battery attracts a rebate of approximately $6,200
*Final rebate amounts vary depending on STC pricing at the time of installation.
Who is Eligible?
The rebate is available to homeowners, small businesses, farms and rural properties and community organisations.
System Requirements:
To qualify for the rebate, installation must be completed by an SAA-accredited installer.
The battery must be connected to a new or existing solar system.
Grid-connected systems must be Virtual Power Plant (VPP) capable, although participation in a VPP is not required.
Off-grid battery systems are also eligible.
Important Information:
The rebate is only available once per property.
Only the first 50 kWh of battery capacity is eligible.
Rebate values are not fixed and may change over time.
The program is designed to step down gradually.
Rising Electricity Prices – Why Batteries Matter More Than Ever
Electricity prices across Australia continue to rise, with peak usage rates now approaching or exceeding $0.60 per kWh in many areas.
This means running air conditioning, heating or pool equipment during peak times is becoming increasingly expensive. Export rates for solar remain low, reducing the value of sending power back to the grid. Households are becoming more exposed to volatile energy pricing.
Without a battery, most homes are forced to buy power at the highest rates, often at night when solar is not available.
With a battery, you can store low-cost or free energy and use it when prices are highest.
Why Install a Battery in 2026
A correctly designed battery system allows you to take control of your energy costs.
It can:
reduce your power bills to near daily supply charges,
help you avoid buying electricity at $0.50–$0.60+ per kWh peak rates,
save from $1,000 to $2,500+ per year depending on your usage,
provide backup power for you during outages, and
maximise the value of your existing solar system.
At JDZ Solar we are committed to providing outstanding service and equipment.
JDZ Solar specialises in battery system design for real-world performance, not just theoretical savings.
We focus on correct system sizing, integration with modern energy plans including free power periods and reliable blackout protection for rural and residential properties.

Why Act Now
- The Federal rebate has already reduced and will continue to step down, meaning the longer you wait the less you receive.
- Electricity prices are rising, with peak rates approaching $0.60+ per kWh, increasing ongoing energy costs.
- The key benefit of installing now is getting your power bills down to around the daily supply charge and keeping them there, with correctly sized batteries typically paying for themselves in around 4–6 years.
